Optimization
Research
The research at the Division of Optimization is mainly directed at the development of new models, new methods and new theory for the solving of real life optimization problems. The problems come from industry and society, and we focus on problems that are too large and difficult to solve with known methods and existing codes. Therefore development of solution methods is a cornerstone in our activities, and we have much experience of developing solution methods that are more efficient than previously know methods. The methods are often specially developed or adapted to the special structure of the problem. Frequently occurring structures that can be exploited are underlying networks, separability by relaxation (Lagrangian relaxation), searching by fixation (meta heuristics) and generation of new possibilities (column generation).
It is usually not a trivial task to formulate a correct, relevant and solvable mathematical model of a complicated decision situation, and often a deep analysis of the real situation is required. We have much experience of this work, and have worked with problems from many application areas, such as telecommunication, forestry, railway, finance, transportation, production etc.
